Nuclear Reactor is a Japanese Ticking Time-Bomb
While the current news reports indicate that the Japanese nuclear reactor at the “stricken” (how one can one say a nuclear reactor is stricken with something, referring it to the flu?) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is getting under control, Canadians (not to mention the Japanese, Hawaiians, Guamese, etc.) are still understandably concerned about jet streams and the potential for radioactive fallout.
Certainly if you play with the dragon, you’re messing with fire; and with nuclear power, while we credit scientists with understanding much about this glorious energy source, still much more remains misunderstood, or not understood. While the world’s fossil fuels are depleted, Canadian oil sands cause more ecological grief than economic good, and many third-world countries still scuttle coal for heat and energy (did I say only third-world?), we lack the resources to develop clean, natural alternative energy sources….and that’s just fucked up.
Why can’t we pour millions of dollars into wind machines, tidal generators, hydro-fucking-electric stations, thermal energy whattyacallits, and other resource-preserving sources? If we can risk some financial loss on whirly-devices on coastal wind points, and we can produce electricity through the motion of the ocean, then certainly we can reduce the risk of global thermal freakin’ meltdown from less-than-perfect nuclear-powered sources.
I’m an honest Canadian with children and legitimate concerns over the use of nuclear power. While I respect that science and technology grasp the idea better than I do, I doubt that they expect that Mother Earth is going to going to have a belly-ache right below one of these atom-generated electricity machines, causing radiation poisoning to local populations, and genuine threats to global interests, not to mention local ecology, wildlife, and the frickin’ sushi that goes on these Japanese dinner plates every night.
Fucked up? I must say it is. Sorry Japan, but your circumstances are more than just a tad fucked at the moment.
